Review of Snow Falling on Cedars (1999) by Stella B — 16 Mar 2009
I'm giving it an extra half star above the average Flixster rating to acknowledge Scott Hicks' collaboration with cinematographer Robert Richardson and Max Von Sydow's performance. For a "small" movie with a "small" storyline it packs a powerful visual punch and at least two emotionally powerful scenes that had me in tears.
It unashamedly wears it's romantic heart on it's sleeve and evokes personal memories of the bliss of childhood sweethearts. The tones are tertiary colours. The emotional "lights" are the beautiful photography and romantic sequences (especially when Hatsue and Ishmael are in the tree drinking droplets of water falling down).
The "darks" are the historical sequences and sad elegy to having to "let go" of your soul mate. An ode to the pain of loss. You'll find yourself blocking out it's more painful moments, or making light of them.
If you're brave you'll take it all on board and let it affect you for days after.
