Review of Snow Cake (2006) by Liam P — 13 Nov 2007
The performances are solid with Weaver, the always reliable Rickman and the underappreciated Moss all in fine form. It's just that the film around them lets them down considerably. The storyline of an autistic woman who loses her daughter in an accident whilst travelling with a man she meets at a roadside diner, Rickman never manages to go anywhere.
The story struggles to work on a deeper level because of its cliched fixation on trying to convince that Weaver's character is in fact autistic through the representation of readily identifiable autistic traits.
Some will argue, well what else are you supposed to show? For me it was simply that it was layered on with a trowel - haphazardly and in far too generous doses.
