Review of Snow Cake (2006) by Katie J — 28 Dec 2010
The chemistry between Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver greatly bolstered this movie. You can usually tell when actors are friends, and their relationship shone through their on-screen personae.
Very, very funny scene in the middle dealing with something Linda told Alex about Maggie. I laughed pretty hard with them.
Weaver's portrayal of an autistic woman impressed me. I enjoyed the general plot of this movie as well, which actually got me quite excited to watch it after I read the summary.
The first time I ever really saw Alan was as Severus Snape from Harry Potter. I never imagined that his primary audience was older, and I must say that he has done well in every film I've seen him in thus far, the most recent being An Awfully Big Adventure and Closet Land (the first of which made little sense in its theatrical plot but was funny and the latter was simply brilliant). My respect for him as an actor has truly grown.
And I've never seen Sigourney Weaver in more than a couple of films, so I am happy to say she did well in Snow Cake. The idiosyncrasies of her character and the times when she told Alex she simply didn't want to talk to him sold Linda to me.
I also quite liked the beginning, and the conversations that transpired between Alex and Vivienne. Vivienne was a sweet girl, and perfectly youthfully eccentric for the modern era of "oddball teenagers".
I really didn't want this movie to end, but I leave with one word: "dazlious"!
8.2/10.
