Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Orlando D — 21 Dec 2012
Like a gambler who feels that he's been cheated by a pro, that is how I feel about Snake Eyes. With Brian DePalma he sets up the movie brilliantly and is a master with extended shots and camera angles but he's working with a script that worked up until the last ten minutes of the film feels contrived and rushed and I was extremely disapointed by the outcome.
Nicholas Cage, in hyper-over acting mode chews the scenery and swallows his co-stars as well plays a crooked cop who witnesses an assassination attempt at a boxing match in an Atlantic City casino. He takes over the investigation and encounters cover ups and set ups.
I really liked the movie and DePalma kept the tension going and I was hooked, until it's seriously implausible ending involving a globe! really? I don't know, maybe this ending was re-shot cause test audiences hated it I don't know, but it could not have been as worst as this ending, plus let the credits roll at the very end I got that ending with the ruby ring.
Not one of DePalma's or Cage's best but not the worst either.
