Review of Smokin' Aces (2006) by Daisy M — 04 May 2010
Smoking Aces was a movie that lacked of depth on all levels, but there where two things that stood out as the major flaws in this movie. Firstly, the characters, were stereotypes. which could be entertaining, but they needed to be fresh and original if they were used as more than a simple supporting type role.
In this movie they were used to the point of nothing that had not been seen time and time again. Secondly, the storyline, it seemed to serve the purpose of creating a stage for the characters to shine, by creating opportunities and circumstances and even allow the use of clever dialogue.
Despite these stereotyped characters and average dialogue, this would still have worked to a certain level. Unfortunately, a series of pointless twists where added, to make this movie something more but the result was simply confusing.
There were some well directed moments, like the tear performance by Jeremy Piven, and I liked when Ryan Reynolds said to Andy Garcia, "Make it all make sense.".
