Review of Smokin' Aces (2006) by Omar L — 17 Aug 2014
What promises to be a crazy screwball farcical shoot-em-up with an ensemble cast delivers precisely that...until the last half-hour brings a change in tone that becomes so serious, the movie stops being fun to watch. The reveal isn't surprising if you're paying attention, so the emotional weight behind it lacks impact, especially given the dark comic tone of the rest of the movie.
Everybody does a great job with the roles they're given, which makes it all the more frustrating when it all falls apart at the end. Everybody becomes serious and loses their charm and charisma, and as a result, everyone becomes less important to care about, either in terms of story or character.
