Review of Smokey and the Bandit (1977) by John H — 31 Aug 2008
One of my favourite all time films. An 18 hour race from Atlanta to Texas and back featuring infamous trucker "The Bandit" (Reynolds) who is dared into bringing back bootleg beer on the trip.
Bandit recruits his trucker friend Snowman to drive the truck, Bandit has a decoy Pontiac Trans Am. Along the way he picks up a runaway bride, and is chased by respected Texas lawman Buford T. Justice (Gleason) whose idiotic son was jilted at the alter.
A chase spills out across America with carnage non stop as policecar after police car gets smashed up. Buford won't let go even though his car is decapitated and nothing more than a rolling set of wheels and seats by the end of the chase.
Bandit is the star, but for me the foul mouthed stream of abuse that comes from Buford (mostly to his son Junior) makes the film a real classic.
