Review of Smokey and the Bandit (1977) by Shane D — 30 Jun 2010
Once upon a time, before I was born, Sally Field was very very cute. So cute in fact, that watching this film 33 years since its release, I now have a major jones for a young Sally Field. That being said, Iâ??d never seen this film but had often referenced it in jokes requiring a bad film reference.
After having sat through it, Iâ??m unsure as to whether I feel as if it should be considered a bad film or not. Well lets be honest, its Burt Reynolds playing a knockabout country boy, running beer across the state line in a Trans-Am, its not high brown cinema by any stretch.
But an argument can be made for this being a pretty light hearted enjoyable effort. The chemistry between Field and Reynolds is sparkling at times and at others, it feels a little repressed but for the most part, the pairing make a great team.
Probably a fine example of brainless 70s B-grade film. That and moustaches.
