Review of Smoke Signals (1998) by Matt O — 06 Apr 2008
I've seen this movie a few times before, but recently became reacquainted with it and truly think that there is something here for everyone, regardless of ethnicity. SMOKE SIGNALS is a beautiful and powerful movie for many reasons and shouldn't be dismissed purely on the basis that it is a film about modern day Native Americans.
Though the picture's primary setting is that of an Indian reservation, and is rightfully peppered with the presence of Native American values and culture, it truly transcends these boundaries with it's honesty towards a more universal message about family values and the loss of childhood innocence.
Heralded as the first movie to be written, directed and co-produced by Native Americans, it is nonetheless as well crafted a film, from the beginning to end, that one could ever hope to invest their time into watching.
Some scenes are like pure magic and others twist that their way into your soul. In the end the movie will win you over with it's honesty and fragile, but elegant beauty. Check it out and enjoy.
