Review of Smiley Face (2007) by Adam P — 24 Oct 2008
Offbeat, oddball stoner comedy. Anna Faris stars as Jane F, an out of work actress, who eats one hash cake too many and spends the rest of the film in a blissed-out, stoned funk. As ever with these stoner films, there's no plot to speak of- Jane has to get to a weed festival in order to meet up with her dealer- but there's plenty of madcap adventures along the way, including Jane's encounters with the police, her audition for a coveted film role, and the theft of the Communist Manifesto.
Doesn't seem to make sense? Well, it doesn't, not really, but it's short, and funny, and quirky, and Faris is exceptional as the scatterbrained, perpetually stoned heroine. Look out for cult film legends John Cho ("Harold & Kumar") and Danny Trejo ("Desperado") in blink-and-you'll-miss-them roles.
