Review of Smiley Face (2007) by Stephanie A — 07 Jul 2012
Greg Araki is a praised director of highly experimental independent films that examine subcultures and sexuality in daring and fruitful ways. âSmiley Faceâ? is probably Arakiâ(TM)s least avant garde work to date, but it still manages to be mighty weird.
The story is about Jane (peculiar Anna Faris) who accidentally digests a considerable dose of pot in the morning of an important day. The film is a sort of odd comical adventure that Jane goes through, completely stoned. Jane is so utterly annoying in her total slowness that it turns this into the ultimate anti-drug film. Trust me, âRequiem for a Dreamâ? will go to a corner to weep its inadequacy after it sees this one.
All of the idiotic humor and the completely wacko plot donâ(TM)t ruin this one completely, so daring and original is Arakiâ(TM)s presentation. Anything could happen in the flick and surprisingly much does.
