Review of Smiley Face (2007) by Cj S — 01 Jul 2010
Directed by Gregg Araki.
Written by Dylan Haggerty.
Starring Anna Faris.
Running Tim: 1 hour and 28 minutes.
Rated: R.
Aside from a great performance by Anna Faris, Smiley Face does not have much to offer. Don't get me wrong, Smiley Face has its moments. The on going monologue going through Anna Faris' head was hilarious and not too over done. Some of the directing by Gregg Araki, acclaimed director of Mysterious Skin, is inspired as well, but none of these good moments can amount to much.
Just looking at this story, you know it doesn't have much. Here it is: "A young woman and her series of misadventures after eating a large number of marijuana cupcakes." Basically, Anna Faris walks around town stoned and tries to interact with normal society. This movie actually could have been funny and this kind of film has worked before, but unfortunately, Smiley Face gets old fast, and by the end, Faris' charm can't save the film.
