Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Dominic D — 09 Jul 2008
Having previously only seen some of Bergman's "heavier" fare, this light bedroom farce comes as a surprise. This movie focuses on the class system and how it shapes actions and perceptions.
It's also quite clear from this movie that Bergman loved and understood women, which is quite a shock for someone who grew up with contemporary sex comedies. Instead of laughing uproariously at crude jokes and degrading nudity, you have perfectly observed characters caught in difficult situations.
