Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Lorraine L — 23 Feb 2009
My first Ingmar Bergman...not particularly thought-provoking, not particularly entertaining. The usual comedy formula: lovers, mismatched. (Though granted, a timeless formula). The cinematography, especially the lighting, feels forced, artificial and stagnant.
I'm not complaining though -- it's just that, having seen this and comparing it with Godard's Breathless, I begin to see just how revolutionary Breathless might have been in terms of cinematography.
