Review of Small Time Crooks (2000) by Errol D — 11 Jun 2005
Woody Allen has made some great movies like "manhattan" , "deconstructing harry" and "bullets over broadway" , but this one is a dud right from beginning to end.
Small time crooks meet to rob a bank under cover of making cookies. The bank job screws up - they dig a tunnel and end up in a clothing store - but the cookies sell like hot cakes and soon ( a year later ) they - Ray ( Woody ) and Frenchy ( Tracey Ullman ) end up as multi millionaires. They have all the trappings of the rich but lack the class. Frenchie wants to learn but Ray is not interested .
In the end - after much whining and verbal diarhorrea , including the introduction of Hugh Grant as the character that teaches Frenchy some class but who in reality is after her millions - they loose it all and end up where they started - small time crooks.
Even Elaine May , who is delightful as the dumb May , cannot lift the movie from its low rating.
