Review of Small Soldiers (1998) by Kelsey H — 03 Mar 2012
The story begins with a business being bought over by a big company. The CEO of Globotech wants a new state-of-the-art toy developed and it is down to two guys efforts that are combined. He wants toys that will actually walk and talk at their own accord like in all the commercials of the past.
So the two toy guys have created the Gorgonites and the Commando Elite who are to do battle to the death. However, one of the inventors wants to impress the new CEO and so jumps through hoops to get the new toys up to the expected standard, but doesn't realise what his dodgy-ness will mean for a troublesome child called Alan and his neighbourhood.
Watch out for all the references to Gremlins. This is a very inventive idea for Hollywood and it delivers from the beginning to the end. It has its comical moments throughout and the special effects and robotics delivered by Stan Winston's Team are reminiscent of the Terminator days.
Give it a watch as you will be very much entertained right from the start!
