Review of Slow West (2015) by Walter M — 07 Jun 2015
In "Slow West," Jay Cavendish(Kodi Smit-McPhee) wants nothing more than to be reunited with Rose(Caren Pistorius). Through sheer determination, grit and mostly just pure dumb luck, Jay has advanced as far as Colorado in 1870. That luck has just run out when he encounters a group of Indian hunters who are really not that picky who they kill. And that's where Silas(Michael Fassbender) enters the story, saving his life and then making a deal to guide him the rest of the way.
"Slow West" is a wildly unpredictable and beautiful movie about the old west that shows the immigrants' dilemma in this new land of widespread violence.(This is a UK/New Zealand co-production which might account for the unique perspective.) So, while there was opportunity to be had for those willing, it did not come without more than its share of risks. This is highlighted well in the closing montage of all the characters who died in the film.
