Review of Slow West (2015) by Alan W — 06 Jul 2015
Starting off like a Western made by Wes Anderson or Jim Jarmusch, the narrative meanders and characters get quirkier, but my main problem with the film is that I find the main protagonist and his romantic motivations naïve and often irritating.
But the film totally redeems itself with a relentlessly violent, very unsentimental (and not at all romantic) finale where it finds itself firmly back in the harsh realm of reality. The film wakes up and with a healthy dose of humour thrown in (the salt jar gag is priceless in my opinion), becomes the movie that I hoped it will be but worried that it won't.
A gutsy and quite remarkable debut for a musician turned film-maker and a rare example of why one should not leave a film halfway, proving a film can surprise you and snatch victory in the last reels.
