Review of Sliding Doors (1998) by Eleonora A — 22 Dec 2010
Despite a fairly interesting premise-gimmick, this film is lame. Really lame. The best bit was when I realised that I recognised the Scottish guy from The Mummy. The acting was poor, none of it was funny or witty (though the writing so desperately tried to be so) and everything else about it is bog-standard as you'd expect from any of these Richard-Curtis-esque, British rom-coms.
My mum tried to justify it being lame with "it's just a feel-good film". Why is that always used as an excuse for films being shit? "It's a Wonderful Life" is proof that wonderful pieces of cinema can be "feel good" too. And anyway, I wouldn't say this is a particularly feel good film. (Spoilers ahead) She dies in one reality and in the other, her boyfriend cheats on her and she has a miscarriage. What a happy ending!
Personal enjoyment: 4/10.
Actual quality as a film: 4/10.
