Review of Sleuth (2007) by Curt C — 16 Jul 2008
A remake of the 1972 film of the same name. As of this writing, I have yet to see the original.
20 to 30 minutes into the film, I was convinced this was going to be a tremendous movie. I was just enthralled with the incredible performance by Michael Caine, and how he was effortlessly carrying this film.
Unfortunately, his character and confidence seems to change from then on; even worse, Jude Law takes over as the central performer. Jude Law is a perfectly capable actor, but his performance is fraught with overacting and hamming, and just reinforced in my mind how much better an actor Michael Caine is. Really, when the basis of your film is two actors plying their craft for 90 minutes, it really throws things off when one (Caine) outclasses the other (Law) this much. Pass.
