Review of Sleuth (1972) by Alyssa N — 29 Mar 2009
Michael Caine and Jude Law were perfectly cast in this tense, entertaining thriller. The majority of the story is told through dialogue in a single settling, and yet the writing is so clever and executed so well that once you're hooked you won't be let go until the final twist unfolds.
Watching the two lead actors play off each other, with the power balance between them constantly shifting, is a joy in itself, so the fact that it's backed up by great cinematography and direction makes this a movie I'd definitely recommend.
Lighting and make-up might deserve some credit, too, because even though he doesn't have all the charisma of Michael Caine, there are moments when I'd swear Jude Law is so beautiful it almost hurts to look at him.
