Review of Sleepy Hollow (1999) by Karl C — 09 Apr 2012
The totally Burtonization of Washington Irving's Classic. Too much of the Headless Horseman diminished his presence on screen. Burton didn't ADAPT the story, he totally rewrote it. Character names & location are the only 2 things that Burton kept the same.
On the positive side, nobody can set the visual tone like Tim Burton. The gothic look, skewed vertical perspective, & subdued tones all lend to the erie atmosphere of Sleepy Hollow. Perhaps somebody in the future will finally create a definitive version of this Classic American ghost story that not only entertains discerning audiences, but also is in keeping with Irving's tale.
It's unfortunate that, except for the Disney animated classic, this is the best cinematic version of the tale to date. Unfortunate INDEED!
