Review of Sleepless in Seattle (1993) by Dave H — 28 Sep 2010
I loved this on release, but I compared it unfavourably to the all-time classic on the genre, also written by Ephron, When Harry Met Sally. Itâ??s true that Sleepless (mainly because it lacks Crystal and Reinerâ??s control) doesnâ??t quite have the humour, vitality, and sharp observations quality of its predecessor, but itâ??s also a classic.
The final reel is 50â??s melodrama corn, but pays off because itâ??s anchored in super-affectionate character stuff before hand â?? not just ever reliable Hanks and Ryan, but especially the spot-on supporting roles â?? Pullman, Wilson, Oâ??Donnell, and Reiner.
A really nice, really great movie.
