Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by James S — 11 Feb 2010
I believe what impresses me most about seeing a Disney cartoon (during his lifetime) was the fluid motion of the characters. The opening scene with all of the individual and group movements is absolutely astounding.
..the time that it took to create such scenes is amazing. Disney cartoons have a look and a feel all their own, and none happen to capture this mood as well as Sleeping Beauty. I would love to give this a complete rating, but a couple of items keep me from doing so.
It is a pure kid's movie, not doubt. Yet, the characters of Aurora and Phillip hardly look 15 (okay, it was her 16th birthday) and 19 (20th brithday?). All Disney flicks seem to have happy endings (yes, I know of Bambi), and Disney has a tendency to re-write stories to give them happy endings.
Well, so be it. The creativity is unbounded, and that is what matters. Plus, the action is great as well. I was not around when this movie was released in '59, but I did see the Fox and the Hound, and the battle scene with the bear sent a couple-hundred children screaming and hiding.
Oh, well such is Disney. Bottom line: Disney cartoon. Need one say more?
