Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Matthew C — 13 May 2010
This film came out somewhat late in the Golden Age of Disney, but in spite of some odd stylistic choices (square trees?), the animation and backdrops are still quite stunning. And it's a pretty good, if a bit tame, retelling of the classic story.
There was a magic in the Disney films of that era that seems to have been lost during the 60s, and never really found again. Not to say they haven't done fantastic work since. But there was something, some mysterious quality, that has been missing but was still present in Sleeping Beauty.
A must for fans of Disney, animation, or of fairy tales in general.
