Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Ryan V — 21 Jul 2016
A lovely princess pricks her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel and is therefore cursed to slumber until a handsome prince awakens her with a kiss. Her fate is guarded by the wicked Maleficent, easily one of the most well-designed and memorable of Disney's villains.
Sleeping Beauty isn't very revolutionary in its storytelling, but it's a triumph on the aesthetic front. Its vibrant animation, which borrows elements from medieval woodcuts and tapestries, carries a gorgeous spectacle that will transfix any cartoon buff.
