Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Michael M — 23 Nov 2013
Holds all the trademarks of the Disney classics, good and bad. Has a uniquely beautiful storybook look, some great secondary characters, a fantastic and cinematically legendary climax, and a fantastic villain.
In its faults though, Aurora is probably the blandest princess in the Disney canon. Hell, she's asleep for half the damn movie. Her prince is also extremely bland, and doesn't even speak for the second half of the movie (seriously, did his voice actor just quite midway through or something?).
The secondary characters like the faeries and obviously Maleficent fare much better and are far more memorable, even if Maleficent's motivations for evil are, well, non-existent. It's not the best from Disney, but it's still got some of Disney's most memorable scenes, and it definitely benefits from one of their most legendary villains.
It has some great scenes of tension, universally great voicework, and an epic climax.
