Review of Sleepers (1996) by Hans L — 17 Nov 2008
It's OK to kill people. As long as they have wronged you first, you have a priest played by Robert De Niro to square things with the lord and the case reeks of homophobia. Spuriously based on fact this revenge drama is the usual morally simplified Death Wish type of material Hollywood loves to pedal.
Dressed up as an authentic, gritty crime drama. When a childish prank ends in tragedy the four boys responsible learn the hard way what it means for a punishment not to fit the crime, as they are subjected to obscene abuse once they enter the penal industry.
Years later revenge is exacted and a courtroom game of cat and mouse unfolds as justice limps on. It's definitely a case of being on autopilot for all involved.
