Review of Sleepers (1996) by Robert B — 02 Feb 2010
Very good movie. I was a little hesitant on buying it because I have heard so little about it, but I am glad I got it. It reminds me a little bit of Once Upon A Time In America with the way it starts with the main actors as kids then a horrible thing happens and it finishes with them as adults.
The story itself was intriguing as well. The characters commit a crime as children and are punished, but the punishment is a bit excessive so they end up seeking revenge when they are older and they do it in brilliant fashion.
The cast does a great job in making you feel what Levinson wants you to feel for each character. You feel sorry for the 4 boys and you hate Bacon and the other guards. It also puts forth several moral vs.
legal decisions and the biggest one is the one that the priest Father Bobby faces and Robert De Niro does an excellent job of depicting this internal struggle. I think this movie is very underrated and is well worth a viewing.
The story is solid and the acting is great.
