Review of SLC Punk (1998) by Theo M — 06 May 2010
Wonderful movie about the very small punk scene in Salt Lake "shitty", Utah (the Mormon State), where you have to drive to Wyoming to get yourself a decent beer. The story is mainly about punkers Stevo and Bob.
Bob is nicknamed Heroin Bob, but he never uses drugs and is afraid of needles. Stevo and Bob love punk music, mohawks, blue hair, parties, chaos, anarchy and fights, while they hate order, posers, rednecks and falling in love.
Of course Stevo's father wants him to go to Harvard law school, and the harder dad pushes, the harder Stevo resists. Stevo hates it when Bob falls in love with Trish, while Sandy cheats on him. Then, all of a sudden, Stevo falls for the pretty Brandy, and practically eats out of her hand, while she tells him that punk is just a fashion statement and that he's a poser himself.
After Bob dies of an overdose of pills at a party, Stevo comes to the conclusion that the best way to fight the system is from within, and he decides to go to law school after all, just like his father wanted him to.
