Review of Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) by Franz I — 14 Apr 2008
As strong an adaptation as humanly possible, trading Vonnegut's satirical personal essay approach for a more literal-yet-absurd whimsical approach to Billy Pilgrim's time-skipping. George Roy Hill's visual direction is uncharacteristically visual, finding the subtlest shifts in framing to shuttle Pilgrim from one year of life to another.
Some power is lost in translation but all things considered, we have little reason to believe that such a great book could translate so successfully.
