Review of Slap Shot (1977) by Aidan L — 18 Jan 2008
A great movie about a losing minor league Ice Hockey team (The Charlstown Chiefs) who when they find out they may be disbanded change their tactics. What this means is intimidating the other team, getting into fights with them and winning every match.
Instrumental to these changes is the Coach Reggie and his brand new short sighted team members 'The Hanson Brothers' (who are basically weedy southern thugs) that relish in the violence. The Coach's closest team Member Ned Braden doesn't agree with these tactics even though their fans love it.
In addition to the great slapstick humour, brutal fights and supporting character's which are funny you also have the heart of the film which is the relationships between the characters and the Human drama from both Reggie and Braden. This mainly involves their relationships with their wives Francine and Lily. Lily is on the brink of leaving Braden and Francine is Coach Reggie's wife, who he's married to but only occasionally with.
The ending is great, where they face off against their arch rivals the Syracuse Bulldogs who have an all -minor league- star team. Reformed The Charlstown Chiefs find their own tactics used against them which results in a great finale.
A comedy very much 70s and really funny.
