Review of Skyscraper (2018) by Kurt M — 14 Dec 2018
I wanted to like this movie. So so bad.
You've got arguably the biggest movie star in the world right now starring in a hard action movie that throws back to classics like 'Die Hard' and 'The Towering Inferno', as you can see in the additional top posters I included from its marketing campaign.
But God damn, this movie just doesn't know what it wants to be and suffers.
I think my problem with this is The Rock seems toned down in this, as his usual charisma and bravado are almost missing here. It really feels like Johnson wants to be a badass in this.... but is harnessed down by its PG-13 rating. BECAUSE of this, he never really gets to take an approach to this , ala Die Hard and make this movie reach its full potential. Shame, because if this had of been a hard R homage to Bruce Willis , this could have been a classic.
His characters motives are real and do make you think 'What would I do in this situation?' , which is one of the movies saving graces.
But this is a step backward for the action career of the big man and quite a let down.
Don't get me wrong - some of the action and set pieces were great in this , but due to every other factor this movie is lacking in, it doesn't make up for its dull, delivery.
The plot line is meh.
The villains are meh.
The supporting cast is very meh and overall it's just a meh summer movie that has gotten lost in the mix , but understandably so.
I wanted to crap all over this movie but it is an easy watch, and if were on Netflix, I would watch it again just to pass a rainy afternoon. Plus, Johnson is still an Action boss.
Fun - yes. Forgettable - very.
Horrible - no.
Grade : C.
