Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Blake P — 02 Feb 2012
In the futuristic 1939, Polly Perkins (Paltrow) is a determined news reporter for the Chronicle, and is ready to get the scoop on the truth behind the disappearances of nuclear scientists. Meeting with Dr.
Jennings, a scientist who believes he's next in line for the kidnapping, Polly finds out that the man responsible is ready to destroy the world. After a huge robot attack on the city, Joe Sullivan "Sky Captain" (Law) is assigned by the government to help solve the case, with Polly in tow.
On their side is the sexy pilot Francesca Cook (Jolie), and mechanic Dexter Dearborn (Ribisi). As pulpy as a glass of orange juice, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a rare example of a sci-fi action film that takes you into a whole new world.
Taking in homage from science fiction classics from the '40's and '50's, director Kerry Conran not only makes the film feel old, but he uses CGI technology to take us into an experience worthy of a Disney ride.
The excellent score and well-done action scenes make the whole movie breathtaking, and though the script has a few weak spots, and the plot is a bit flimsy, the beautiful visuals make up for it. Set right in between color and sepia, the cinematography at times was so nice to look at I kept reminded myself that it was all the work of the computer.
Every set and every setting was created by green screen technology meaning that the actors all had no sets, not only showing how much talent they have, but how much they would do for a role. Despite the star power, and the fun action packed scenes, the film failed at the box office, earning about half of its budget.
This shows how little the world really appreciates a true work of art. "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a film that should be up there with even "Star Wars" or even the "Indiana Jones" franchise.
It's original, well-made, and never ever boring. An action movie for the whole family, what could be better? Recommended.
