Review of Skinned Deep (2004) by Mike S — 28 May 2005
[b]I generally like gory low budget horror, but Skinned Deep just didn't do it for me. The main problem is the shitty story that really makes no sense and jumps all over the place. Combine that with acting that's almost as bad as I've ever seen and that's a combination for disaster.
The movie was decently directed and had it's moments. Not really scary, but it definitely had potential with a better writer. As a said before it just made no sense. People did things that were so illogical I found myself rolling my eyes more then any movie in recent memory.
That being said the villains weren't all that impressive either. We had a guy with a giant brain that looked fake, and a midget that throws plates? Incidentally if you recognize that midget he is Warrick Davis (Leprechaun, Return of the Jedi as Wicket, and Willow as well Willow).
The grandma was the worst though...it seemed as if she delivered her lines so slowly she never bothered to learn them and was reading off a script as she went. On the positive side one of the villains was pretty cool albeit used incorrectly.
I believe he is referred to as the Surgeon General and he's pretty damn cool looking. If he were used more effectively this movie could have been a whole lot better. Also the gore is heavy and most of the time pretty decent.
Aside from the brain and a few explosions I dug the gore factor. Overall Skinned Deep is a rental at best with no character development, and to many illogical and weird plot holes to be an effective movie.
I thought I knew what it was going for in terms of horror/comedy, and then it would turn serious. Trust me this movie should never have tried to take itself seriously. Half the time it didn't even make sense.
