Review of Sixty Six (2006) by Jenna G — 20 Feb 2011
This film may be a comedy, but its actually surprisingly emotional to watch. Marsden is funny and sympathetic to watch at all times; someone who tries and tries and yet can never seem to catch a break.
Sulkin's character is so resonant also. Everyone has felt a loser at some point in their life, and everyone worries about whether or not they are wanted. The scene where Bernie gives his Bar Mitzvah speech in his room is probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes you're likely to see in any film.
But the sadder parts of the film are consistently balanced with the comedic side, and as such rarely gets to heavy-handed or depressing. It has the typical 'Oh-no-what's next' style of comedy, but its handled well enough so that it serves to always endear the characters to the audience.
