Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Eytan D — 23 Apr 2013
Nobody understood teenagers better than John Hughes. The 80's belonged to him, and "Sixteen Candles" marked his teen movie debut. The movie is hilarious, only slightly raunchy, and ultimately, it feels real.
Hughes' characters are so naturally written and performed with such relaxation that you can't help but like them. Molly Ringwald is so charismatic and fresh, Anthony Michael Hall piles on the laughs as the world's greatest geek, and you can't help but love Long Duk Dong.
Did I mention Hughes had a thing for great 80's music? It's not "The Breakfast Club," but it's a seriously awesome debut for Hughes.
