Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Krishna S — 23 May 2011
A typical 80s teen comedy classic which is funny and entertaining. Sixteen Candles is about a girl who suffers from every embarassing moment possible on her sixteenth birthday (and hence the title). Her parents forget her birthday and lots of other crap happens.
The movie works well as a comedy. The best part of the movie is Anthony Michael Hall. He pitches in a stupendous performances as the Geek. His childishness, his geekiness and his charm makes you laugh and laugh some more. Molly Ringwald looks beautiful and acts well. Also, it is fun to watch John and Joan Cusack in small roles in their pre-fame days.
The movie is the first of the many teen comedies/classics which were to be churned out in the 1980s by John Hughes (others include classics such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club). The movie is well paced and there isn't a dull moment. It has moments which are quite heartwarming (like Ringwald's chat with her father). Overall, it is a nice movie and appreciated more when seen in teh context of its time. Recommended viewing.
