Review of Six Degrees of Separation (1993) by Robert C — 01 Sep 2013
(4 out of 5 Stars) Like the play that was based on (which in turn was based on the true story of con man David Hampton), the film carries with it some deep and heavy issues (i.e., purpose, imagination, race, et.
al). What seemed to be central to the story is the pretentiousness of the characters -- now whether this was a reflection, a parody, or a flaw in the story makes it vague if this was intentional or not, but was for me an interesting study of being drunk (and pulled in) on one's own narcissism.
The story seems to be transplanted to film rather than adapted... which adds a certain flavor (and amplifies the subtle and necessary conceit inherent in the nature of plays). Whether it adds or takes away from the movie is really hard to say.
