Review of Six Degrees of Separation (1993) by Nicola D — 24 Jul 2012
A literate, art-inclined, spellbinding comedy/drama, with phenomenal performances by Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland. (Will Smith as a gay man -- long before he became an action superstar -- no doubt has his best role, despite all the stage-bound dialog and one very false scene -- more undone by film editing than performance, though.
) The denouement is heartbreaking, and Stockard Channing's final scene/monologue is a showstopper of emotional triumph! Fred ("Iceman," "A Cry In The Dark") Schepisi's probing direction keeps writer John Guare's verbose theatricality flowing with perception and insight.
A film more for the intelligensia set, but certainly not elitist.... Definitely a forgotten gem!
