Review of Sita Sings the Blues (2008) by V9Y J — 09 Mar 2009
The film is enjoyable for anyone who doesn't know their Ramayana (or doesn't care). For someone that does, it suffers from the same issue that creeps up in almost every western adaptation of an Indian tale i.
E. lack of required research. Some may find the trivialization of an epic and its characters distasteful. The idea of bringing a group of Indians loosely discussing the story was novel and would have worked better if the group was prepared or had a better understanding of the epic.
I liked the humor, some of the animation, and the songs, but again, shoddy research and its maker's arrogant ignorance of Ramayana's cultural perspective left me less than satisfied, actually a little bitter.
