Review of Sita Sings the Blues (2008) by David M — 02 May 2009
An absolutely one-of-a-kind experience. If you've not heard of this one, the premise itself is brilliant. Nina Paley's husband took a job in India. She goes to visit him and for some reason he's really cold to her.
After she returns home, she receives an email saying "Don't come back." She's been dumped. In her heartbreak, she discovers the Indian epic "The Ramayana" and finds parallels with her own suffering.
The catharsis? A five-year journey culminating in this animated masterpiece. She skillfully weaves between her own story, and Sita's, all the while employing multiple animation techniques, and incorporating the music of 1920's jazz singer Annette Hanshaw.
This movie must be seen to be believed, and it's one of the few times I've been able to enjoy a movie as a true expression of one singular person. Nina Paley has put her own personal - indelible - mark on the animated cinema landscape.
Watch it free online, via PBS Channel 13 in New York. Just Google "Sita Sings the Blues". Highest, HIGHEST recommendation.
