Review of Sisters (1973) by Clarissa C — 28 Apr 2008

This is actually a pretty tricky little thriller and I really liked the style and the way it was laid out for us. I didn't know much about this film going into it, only that it is released on Criterion (which usually means "good"), and that it's a Brian DePalma outfit (which usually also means "good"). I laid down the $30 for the DVD without hesitation, and I never have regretted it.

It starts out as we witness some bloodshed in a young model's appartment and so does a neighbor across the street. Well the neighbour tries to have this investigated to no avail, and there is no trace of anything. Well since the title gives away that there is more than one, the model does have a twin sister.

Could she be responsible? Was it imagined? There is a fair amount of blood to keep horror fans interested but the story is fascinating enough it's hardly necessary. A very well done thriller at the end of the day, especially since it's one of DePalma's first horror films if not the first. It's stylish, classy and yet satisfies just about every horror need, it's a shame DePalma couldn't keep this sort of momentum up for long.
