Review of Sister Act (1992) by Johnny T — 28 Mar 2011
Goldberg's voice - a flat, gravelly drone of skepticism - is a great comic instrument. The best parts of the movie are the musical numbers when Goldberg, who takes over directorship of the choir, turns popular songs from the 1960s into hymns, complete with lounge-act choreography. The songs are great and the joy of the music really comes through. The film is funny and very warm-hearted. The comic element gets a major boost, meanwhile, from supporting players, particularly Kathy Najimy's ebullient Sister Mary Patrick and dour Mary Wickes as the former choir-master. Confronted with her new bedroom, a hellacious garret that, to her amazement, doesn't even have a phone, she hits hilarious tones of incredulity; she simply can't believe anyone would live like this.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
