Review of Singles (1992) by Jessicaann D — 07 Mar 2008
At the time it all seemed so fresh and so relevant to those grunged out Seattle years, however with age it just doesn't hold up that well. Crowe's script is amateurish and nowhere near as great as 'Almost Famous' (still his best movie).
The acting is so-so and rather difficult given the diary-face-to-camera explication tactic. Kyra Sedgwick is charming as every yuppie-grunge-wannabe-dude's fantasy; Campbell Scott embodies the aforementioned male archetype of the times; Bridget Fonda is sweet as the put-upon girlfriend of a rocker, played rawkingly by Matt Dillon with just as much self-importance as the undiscovered continue to have.
The highlight for me would have to be the cameo by Soundgarden right before they made it big. Chris Cornell does some awful background ac ting in one scene, however when they are given a chance to rock, it is a memorable classic moment.
