Review of Singles (1992) by Nik B — 21 Nov 2009
I revisted the films recently of one of my favorite soundtracks ever. Cameron Crowe was definitely onto something here that he would later accomplish much better with "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous". I'm not so cynical about the nature of love to not enjoy a simple romantic comedy. But it is a little too simple. We romanticize this movie because it highlights a very specific point of time - Seattle in the early 90s. The cameos by some of our heroes is a real treat. Not to mention the secret Eric Stoltz cameo as the mime.
You know the stories. One hook-up, the Sedgwick/Scott couple, has romance and tragedy and works VERY well. The less romantic Fonda/Dillon pairing provides most of our comedic turns. "Debbie" is a single girl on the prowl which drags down the film entirely.
Worth a watch, but don't expect to be moved to tears.
