Review of Sing Street (2016) by Rachel M — 03 May 2016
This movie has so many elements of a movie I love and would want to recommend to friends, the whole making of a band element and what drives music and creativity really was inspiring in the same way that Begin Again continues to be.
But I thought after the first half all the originality dissolved into a stereo typical high school musical. The music even seemed to be missing the eighties theme. It just it felt like this movie was trying to be too many things at once.
Is it about the music, ireland, abusive relationships, the love story, the band. Its almost like all the competing forces of the film collide and all we end up with is this formulaic story that isn't believable.
How good the band is for fourteen year olds who never played together, how the story was effected by school principle and the surrounding environment of Ireland in the mid eighties, parents divorcing, abusive classmates, the older boyfriend of the main love interest.
Its almost like when writing the script they knew they needed conflict but couldn't commit to which conflict to focus on so they brought everything in.
