Review of Sing Street (2016) by Jean-Paul F — 18 Aug 2016
From the creator of the whine and cry indie-pop musical sleeper-hit "Once", John Carney, comes a way more bearable and universally enjoyable film. Joining the trend of 80's set period pieces, "Sing Street" effortlessly captures a time and place that I never experienced but thankfully, barely missed.
All sardonic sentiments aside, it is beautifully shot, incredibly well acted, brimming with humor, and I can't really see how anyone could dislike this movie. Obviously, the setting dictates that new-wave should be underlying musical direction of the film, and when it sticks to those retro-conventions, the soundtrack is catchy and fresh.
Unfortunately, when it moves into more traditional pop styles it sounds too contemporary and becomes cringe-inducing. All in all, it is definitely the best musical film so far this year, not that there's much competition, but perhaps more importantly it is fun and funny.
