Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Mike S — 17 Sep 2014
I was looking forward to this follow up, although the 7 year wait did make it feel less exciting.
Whilst the film is very much like Sin City, the film lacks the tight structure of the first one. The best elements are the middle story featuring Eva Green, but the rest of the stories feel forced and the dialogue this time around feels written to be 'cool' rather than being cool. I feel Frank Miller directed more of this one than number one.
Brolin tries hard and is suited to the genre, but his character isn't as interesting this time around. Rourke is obviously great again, but his character doesn't really go anywhere and just repeats the same stunts as the first film.
Eva Green also suits the genre well, but it's a shame she wasn't in the first one.
Jessica Alba is the weakest in the film, and her character having more to do just adds to the weakness of her characters plot.
And Bruce Willis is still in Bruce Willis mode... as in post RED, where he just delivers lines with no effort. His great performance from the first film is not repeated here... just a ghostly reminder that he was in the first one...
Boring in parts and lacking the coolness of the first. Stick to the original.
