Review of Simon of the Desert (1965) by Private U — 07 Feb 2009
Bunuel's over-rated interpretation of St Simeon Stylites who was a Christian ascetic saint who achieved fame because he lived for 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar in Syria. Simon wants to be nearer to God, so he climbs the column. The devil wants him to get down on earth and is trying to seduce him. But Simon recognizes him everytime. So the devil takes him to a nightclub in New York of the 1960s and the movie suddenly ends...
Not too sure where Bunuel was heading with this and the fact that the film is 'surreal' is not an excuse for it being incomprehensive.
